How Do I Balance Work and Family?

No doubt about it - balancing your work life with your family life can be tricky. You want to be there for your family, but you're also juggling the demands of your career, which can leave you feeling overwhelmed and inadequate. But while it may not always be easy, it's possible for you to find a healthy balance between work and family. These three tips will help you get started.

1. Set boundaries.

Setting strong boundaries between your work life and home life is the most important step you can take towards achieving balance. Figure out where you're willing to sacrifice and where you won't compromise, and then stand by it. Do you need to keep your Saturday mornings free so you can watch your kids' soccer games? Is it important to you to spend time with your partner and kids on their birthdays? If so, be upfront with your boss that you can't work overtime on those days.

Another good way to set boundaries is to refuse to bring your work home. Don't use your after-work hours to answer emails or sneak in a little extra work on your new project. Leave your work at the workplace, and devote your time at home fully to your family life.

2. Create daily routines with your family.

Make family time a part of your everyday routine. Figure out what you can do with your partner and kids every day, either before or after work. Having meals together is one great way to bond every day, and talking over dinner is a good way to keep up with what's going on in your loved ones' lives. Other ideas could include reading books to your kids before bed, helping your kids pack their lunches in the morning, or going for a family walk in the evening.

3. Plan activities together.

Think of some special things you can do with your family on your days off. Small day trips, such as visiting an apple orchard or a theme park, are often fun for kids (and for you, too). You could also designate one day every week to go hiking, play board games, or do whatever else your family likes. Your activities don't have to be extravagant or expensive - just something you and your family will look forward to and enjoy.

Finding a balance between work and family life is no easy feat. With commitment and effort, though, you can stay close to your family without sacrificing your career. Put these ideas to work for you, and you'll find yourself feeling more satisfied with both your work life and your personal life.
